We all know how important making a good first impression is, especially in business. You don’t often get a chance at a second first impression, so it’s really important to make sure that you get it right first time and create the positive impression that you want to succeed.
Here are a few tips on making a good first impression.
Look The Part
First impressions are often made without you ever having spoken a word. We make assumptions about people purely on their appearance. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that you are dressed appropriately and are well groomed.
If you are attending a meeting, networking event or interview, be on time (or arrive slightly earlier). Tardiness doesn’t give a good impression and may suggest that you are unreliable.
Happiness = positivity. Smile. Smiling makes you appear more confident as well as making you more approachable. Make eye contact with the person you’re speaking to, but not too much that you make them feel uncomfortable. For example, making eye contact when greeting someone, but you don’t need to maintain it through the whole conversation.
How you greet someone is important. A “Hello” and “Nice to meet you” with a firm handshake works well – that goes for both men and women!
